This opening scene from "It Might Get Loud" a documentary that brings together rock guitar legends Jimmy Paige, the Edge, and Jack White to discuss their creative process.
Jack White's construction of this guitar reminded me of Picasso's Guitar and Bottle of Bass assemblage. The materials - rustic wood and nails, chipping white and gray paint on wood in the background, the act of construction, the incorporation of a bottle. The similarities are coincidental, but still ring true in the spirit of transformation and creation.
If you have yet to see this documentary, it's a must-watch. The film shows the vastly different approaches the three artists take in creating their art, but the level of respect and camaraderie is very appealing to watch. All three are continuing to explore the boundaries of their music - the two younger men basically sit in awe of Paige, but he returns the favor of respecting their artistry. The contrast in philosophy between the two younger men is also interesting. The Edge turns to technology and effects units to create new sound qualities to his guitar. Jack White's aesthetic is intentionally low-tech, exploring ways to make new sounds from antiquated equipment. He has an interesting take on technology and art:
